Information for Canadian Scouts and Leaders
What: Michigan International Camporee 2004 will be an 8 day camping experience for Scouts, Venturers, and leaders from over 20 countries, held from August 1 - 8, 2004, at Northwoods Scout Reservation near West Branch, Michigan.
Participants: All youth participants must be registered members of Scout units and must be at least 12 years old, or at least 11½ years old and have completed the sixth grade in school, by August 1, 2004. Scouts under 13 years old on that date must be endorsed by adult leaders who will participate in the camporee. U.S. Boy Scouts must be at least First Class by that date. Other participants must have similar camping experience. Contingents may contain all boys or be mixed boys and girls. All youth participants must be under 18 years of age as of August 8, 2004. Northwoods is a NO SMOKING camp, and we expect all camporee participants, youth and adults, to be nonsmokers during the 8 days of the camporee. There are no alcoholic beverages permitted at Northwoods at any time.
Program: Swimming, rowing, canoeing, fishing, tubing, archery, rifle and shotgun shooting, Scoutcraft, nature, activities related to Michigan history, and opportunities for Scouts and leaders from other countries to share their songs, games, and other Scouting activities. There will be no badge work.
International Participation: : As of May 1, 2004, contingents from Australia, Austria, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Egypt, Guatemala, Hungary, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, Mexico, Mongolia, Netherlands Antilles, New Zealand, The Philippines, Trinidad & Tobago, Uganda, and Zimbabwe are planning to participate.
Fee: US $225, including food, for U.S. and Canadian Scouts and Venturers, US $80, including food, for U.S. and Canadian troop leaders and camporee staff members
Uniforming: the same as at a U.S. National Jamboree, with all participants required to wear full official Scout uniforms of their countries at ceremonies and other campwide activities
Unit Participation – There will be a very limited number of spaces for groups of Canadian Scouts and Venturers. Each Canadian group will consist of a "patrol" of 8 Scouts or Venturers and 2 adult leaders or a "half patrol" of 4 Scouts or Venturers and 2 adult leaders. Coed groups must have one male and one female adult leader. Additional adults who will be traveling with a group can apply to be camporee staff members. Canadian groups must bring their own tents and personal camping equipment with them. All groups participating in the Michigan International Camporee must travel with approved tour permits and follow travel rules of their Scout Association.
Each Michigan International Camporee campsite troop will contain approximately 40 youth and 8-10 adult leaders. 24 Scouts/Venturers and 4-6 adult leaders will be from the United States and Canada and 16 Scouts and 4 adult leaders will be from outside of the U.S. and Canada, either one large contingent or several small contingents. The campsite adult leaders will form the 40 youth participants into 4 mixed patrols of 10 members each for the week’s activities, so it is likely that buddy pairs from an out-of-state patrol will be placed in different campsite patrols. One of the campsite adult leaders from Michigan will serve as the campsite Scoutmaster. The other 7-9 adult leaders in the campsite will serve as campsite assistant Scoutmasters.
Canadian groups are welcome to arrive at Northwoods on Saturday, July 31, so they can set up and get ready for the camporee. However, food service from the commissary will begin with the evening meal on Sunday, August 1, and will end with lunch on Sunday, August 8. Groups arriving on July 31 are responsible for providing their own meals until the evening meal on August 1. The nearest airport to Northwoods is Flint, but Detroit can also be used.
